Exhibition Review: Spirits & Headhunters: Art of the Pacific Islands

This review was written for Prof. Moira West’s AH 455 Traditional Art of Africa course in Spring 2019, and is of the ongoing exhibition Spirits & Headhunters: Art of the Pacific Islands at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, CA. I used this review to point out the reductive stereotypes of Pacific Island nations perpetuated by the exhibition, basing my analysis on both James Clifford’s concept of the Salvage Paradigm as well as Ann Marie Baldonado’s essay on representation.
